- It's quite possible that most of you know this, but for those who don't
- (like me up until today), here's the dope for those of you who want to
- install the PostScript Fonts that come with LightWave 4.0 pre-release, for
- Windows, on your machine so you can use them with Photoshop, or Word, etc.
- I wanted to use the fonts in conjunction with some Photoshop auxiliary
- projects to go with my animations, and thats when I discovered the
- problem.
-
- Heres how I solved it:
-
- First, it was easiest from a organizational standpoint to put the all the
- PostScript fonts, whether from the CD-ROM or from other sources, together,
- and have ATM look there for its fonts. This allows you to look in one
- place when you need to install ATM fonts, and look in one place when you
- need to load a font into Modeler.
-
- To do this, I changed ATM (by starting it and clicking on ADD to get to
- the default directories listing) to look in the psfonts directory for
- all its PostScript font outline information, and look at psfonts/pfm for
- the font metric information (the directory pfm, I created). Then, I put
- the installed fonts that ATM comes with into their two proper folders;
- .PFB files into psfonts, .PFM files into psfonts/pfm.
-
- FYI--.PFBs are the font outline information files, and .PFMs are the
- printer font metric files, as if you couldnt guess from the paragraph
- above. .AFM are Adobe font metric files, which wont work with Windows,
- causing the whole problem in the first place.
-
- Next, I pulled out the LightWave fonts from their individual folders and
- put the outline information (which are the files without extensions) in
- the psfonts folder. Then, I took the font metric files (the files with
- .AFM as their extension), and put them into pfm.
-
- Now that things were organized, I deleted the empty folders the fonts used
- to be in, and moved to converting the fonts.
-
- The third major step was to rename the font outline information with the
- extension .PFB so ATM will recognize them. I did this with the good old
- wildcard * in File Manager.
-
- Fourth, and most importantly, the .AFM (Adobe font metric) files need to
- be converted to .PFM (Printer Font Metric) files for use by the PC.
- Scrounging around the net, I found a utility called Refont from Acute
- systems on AOL that did the conversion. Im sure wherever you are, you
- can find a similar utility.
-
- Once youve done the conversion, you have the .AFM files and the .PFM
- files in the pfm directory. At this point, unless youre really
- paranoid and don't want to chance having to reinstall the fonts from
- CD-ROM, you can delete the .AFM files. LightWave will still read all the
- fonts just fine after the conversion.
-
- Finally, start up ATM, and go to ADD. When you navigate to the
- psfonts directory, you should see all the LightWave fonts available for
- installation, and ready to go. Of course, you probably dont want to
- over-burden your whole system with fonts, since how many will you actually
- use, but thats up to you.
-
- Probably all of this will be solved by the time the real release of 4.0
- comes out, but until the, I hope this helps someone out there. If I
- didnt explain it well, please E-Mail me and Ill try to be more coherent.
